Johanna Maria Wilhelmina "Joanie" Bohmbach, 83, of Gladstone, MO, died after a brief illness, Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at her home. There will be a celebration of her life, from 6:30 -8:30 pm Saturday, August 7, 2010 at Marcy's Lounge, 2631 NE Vivion Road, Kansas City, MO, featuring her favorite band, The Rangers. In lieu of flowers it is requested that contributions be made to Kendallwood Hospice, 2908 NW Vivion Rd., Riverside, MO 64150.
Joanie was born June 2, 1927 in Djakarta, Indonesia the daughter of Henry A. and Jacoba Noordhoorn Schilder. Joanie met Henry Bohmbach in Indonesia while she was working as the secretary for the president of KLM and Henry was working as a field service rep for General Dynamics. In 1950 Joanie and Henry Mason Bohmbach were the first couple to be married in flight on a KLM Royal Dutch Airliner, an event that attracted world wide media attention. Joanie was the manager of the Platte Woods Pharmacy for 32 years. Following her retirement she proudly served as a volunteer for Kendallwood Hospice for fifteen years .
Joanie is survived by her daughter, Susan Bohmbach, Lake Waukomis, MO, and grandson, Vincent Thomas Ribaudo, Kansas City, MO and her countless dance partners. The family would like to convey its special gratitude to her "other daughter", Paula Slocomb, Kendallwood Hospice, also Englewood Vista and Marcy's for all the love and care over the years.
