Edwin Ronald "Ron" Carruth, 72, of Parkville, Missouri, passed away on June 25, 2010, at Kansas City Hospice House, after a battle with cancer.
His family will hold a private graveside service. A public memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm on Thursday, July 1, at the Graham Tyler Chapel on the campus of Park University in Parkville. Family will receive visitors in the hour preceding the memorial service. Following the service, visitors are invited to a gathering, also on the Park campus, the specific location to be announced at the memorial service.
Mr. Carruth was born on April 4, 1938 in McComb, Mississippi.
He graduated from Millsaps College in 1960 and, in 1970, received his Ph.D. in educational administration from the University of Southern Mississippi.
Over four decades, he held administrative and executive positions in education and information technology.
In the late 1960s, as an assistant superintendent, Mr. Carruth was instrumental in the desegregation of the McComb Public Schools.
He did this at great personal risk to himself and his family.
He also made important strides in the administrative and instructional use of computers.
For twenty years, Mr. Carruth served as CEO of TIES, a Minnesota-based information-technology education consortium. He also worked as director of information technology for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in Virginia. More recently, Mr. Carruth was director of student recruiting and marketing at Park University.
He was preceded in death by his parents Edwin Brady and Annie Margaret Carruth, known by all as "Marguerite."
Mr. Carruth is survived by his wife of nearly 39 years, Gayden, of Parkville.
He is also survived by three children: a daughter, Gene Keifer, of Wake Forest, North Carolina, and her husband David; a son, Clem Stovall, of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, and his wife Ashley; and another son, Neal Carruth, of Washington, D.C., and his wife Emily Barocas.
Mr. Carruth was especially proud of his four grandchildren: Marguerite, Jackson, and Katie Stovall; and Sofie Keifer.
In addition, he is survived by a brother, Robert, of Houston, Texas, and Lafayette, Louisiana, and his wife Emma, as well as their children Cavan and Lori.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to support the Carruth Student Learning Grant, a scholarship awarded by the Park Hill School District Education Foundation, 7703 NW Barry Road, Kansas City, MO 64153.
Mr. Carruth's family would like to thank the staffs of St. Luke's Northland Hospital and Kansas City Hospice House for their gentle and loving care.

Gayden,
I was so sorry to read about Ron. I didnt know he was ill. Ron was a strong advocate for our Northland United Way board. I could always count on him to make his views heard, and I often agreed. He was always a gentleman and I am honored to have been his friend. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
